Project Overview
The East Capitol Street, NE project will provide modifications and safety improvements for both vehicular and pedestrian traffic within the East Capitol Street corridor between Stoddert Place, SE to Southern Avenue, NE.
This project will examine the existing and future traffic, transit, pedestrian and bicycling conditions to improve pedestrian safety and access as related to street crossings, transit stops, sidewalks and traffic calming along each corridor and, where applicable, provide design recommendations consistent with the DDOT Pedestrian Master Plan.
Based on the collective input of the community, the project will potentially include the following modifications:
  1. Widening of sidewalks, landscaping, streetscaping, pedestrian facilities, including ADA compliant ramps.
  2. Traffic calming measures such as curb extensions and refuge islands.
  3. Design of new intersection geometry such as reducing curb radii, crosswalk realignment, bike lanes, etc.
  4. New traffic signals and retiming of existing signals.
  5. Relocation of transit stops, typically to the far side, to facilitate pedestrian safety.
